Children’s Literacy and the Four-way-Test

Buena Park Rotary is embarking on a Literacy/Ethics Program by using a book & materials developed by the Fairborn Rotary Club in Ohio. The Apple Dumpling Adventures of Andy & Elmer are illustrated in a hardbound storybook and paperback activity color book, which introduces young people to the Four-Way Test. These beautifully illustrated books are kid- friendly and are designed for 2-3 grade level.

We discovered Andy & Elmer this summer in Birmingham at the RI Convention House of Friendship. The Buena Park Rotary is planning to donate the hardbound book to all 2nd grade classes in our community, and one copy for each school library. Club members will try to visit each class and start them reading the book. Each student will receive a colorful bookmark with the Four-Way Test.

This program will give students an introduction to Rotary and an Ethics Lesson. We believe this is a great opportunity for your club to introduce students to Rotary at an early age, and reinforce ethical behavior. This program ties in with state curriculum guidelines for teaching character education. This is an affordable program for both large and small clubs. Rememberthat the Future is in our Hands.
