2011 Club Speech Contest
The program this week was the Annual High School Speech Contest. Three students from Buena Park High School participated, and they spoke on the theme of “Building Communities—Bridging Continents.” The participants were sophomore Adonay Gutierrez, Junior Precious Daileg, and Dave Truong, a Senior. The students applied the theme to their friends’ and their own experiences at school, in JROTC, in the agriculture program at BPHS, and in their own neighborhoods. All ably represented the theme and spoke of how community service and reaching out to others strengthens human bonds.
Judges are a very important part of any speech contest, and our judges for the day did an excellent job. They were:
• Loreen Berlin, local news reporter and photographer;
• Steve Hunt, Buena Park Director of Recreation, Parks, and Community Services; and
• Kenny Vaughn, Rotary member and owner of the Bella Dia Salon and Day Spa.
After the speeches, judges huddled in an adjacent room to choose the winner. For 1st place, they chose Dave Truong, who will go on to the Area Contest March 26th. If he places well enough there,he will compete at the District contest on April 16th. If Dave Truong cannot compete at the Area Contest, 2nd place winner Adonay Gutierrez will take his place. All contestants received certificates and monetary prizes.
