Wilma Davenport
Our Buena Park Rotary Club Non-Rotarian Citizen-of-the-Year for 2008-2009 is Wilma Ann Potts Davenport.
Wilma is a commensurate athlete, very active Police Dept. and Senior Citizen Center volunteer, and a vital member of her church. As an athlete, Wilma has excelled as a softball pitcher, discus and shotput thrower, tennis and basketball player. In 1998, for example, she won a gold medal in the Senior Olympics for a basketball free throw contest where she scored 23 out of 25 shots. The pictures attest to her successes.
Wilma and her husband Bob were married on Valentine’s Day in 1961. They have lived in Buena Park since 1963 and raised three sons here. One son is a Lt. Cmdr in the US Coast Guard, Another is a Pro Tennis instructor. Wilma and Bob are very proud of their 5 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.
In 2001, Wilma attended and graduated from the Police Academy Training Class with the B.P. Police Department. Currently, she is working toward her 2000-hour pin. Many people around the city know Wilma and often see her in uniform at city events, such as the Police Open House, etc. She is a veteran volunteer and her efforts help to maintain the safety of our city.
At the Senior Center, Wilma works with Meals on Wheels to distribute food to home-bound seniors. She and Bob have loads of fun with the Shuffleboard Club, which they brought back to life.
As an active member of Christ Community Church, Wilma is an important member of the Prayer and Care Ministry Team. She says, “Thru it all, I give God the Glory!”
For her active presence in our city and for her infectious, ever-positive attitude, we designate Wilma Davenport as the Buena Park Rotary Club Citizen-of-the-Year for 2008-2009.
